Bats in your Vinings home

Bats eat night-flying insects, and Vinings has plenty: the Chattahoochee runs along its edge, and the wooded hillsides and ravines produce insects all summer. The houses give bats somewhere to sleep during the day. On a hillside home, the downhill side often rises two or three stories, with a tall gable end, a gable vent and long runs of trim — high, warm, out of reach, and exactly what a colony looks for. Bats don't chew; they slip through gaps as narrow as a finger that are already there.

Most people never hear them. The number-one sign is droppings on the ground, a deck or a window ledge below where the bats roost — small, dark and crumbly. You might also see bats leaving at dusk or notice a dark stain around a vent. Because bats are protected and their young can't fly for part of the year, removing them is a matter of timing, not trapping.

April 1 to July 31: the maternity season

From April 1 through July 31, female bats in Georgia are giving birth and nursing pups that can't fly. If the exits are sealed during that time, the adults get out but the pups die inside — a smell, a mess and a violation of the rules protecting bats. So exclusion is normally scheduled for early spring before pups are born, or from August on once they can fly. If the bats aren't causing a health problem, waiting is the right call. Georgia DNR does allow exclusion inside that window when a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator carries it out. An inspection can be done any time.

Why the tall downhill wall makes it harder

On a sloped Vinings lot, the place bats like best is often the hardest to reach — a gable vent three stories up over a walk-out basement, or a ridge high above a steep backyard. The pro has to inspect the entire roofline and watch where bats leave at dusk, because a colony with one missed gap just moves over to it. Reaching those spots safely may take tall ladders or a lift, which is part of why bat jobs vary so much in price.

Droppings, histoplasmosis and a bat in the house

Bat droppings, or guano, can carry the fungus that causes histoplasmosis, a lung infection people catch by breathing in dust from disturbed droppings. Don't sweep or vacuum it yourself. If the guano can be removed, it usually should be — but ask the pro to show you the damage before agreeing to replace all your insulation, since that's often recommended when it isn't needed. A bat inside your living space is a different matter: any bat can carry rabies, so if one is found in a room where someone was sleeping, or near a child, don't release it; call your local health department.

How a one-way exclusion works

The pro installs a one-way device — sometimes called a bat valve — over the gaps the colony uses. Bats fly out at night to feed and can't get back in. After enough time for the whole colony to leave, the pro checks visually that the roost is empty and then seals every gap with permanent materials. A small job, such as bats only in a gable vent, can take a single visit. A large colony usually takes two or three.

Don’t seal the gap yourself

It's tempting to grab a caulk gun the moment you spot where the bats go in. During the maternity season, or before all the bats are out, that traps them inside your wall, where they die, smell and can find their way into your living space looking for another exit. Sprays, mothballs and ultrasonic gadgets don't move a colony either. Inspect first, then exclude on the right dates.

Finding droppings under a vent or gable? Don’t seal anything yet. Note where the droppings land and call — your Cobb County pro can tell you whether it’s safe to exclude now.

Common bat questions in Vinings

I have bats in my attic in Vinings — how do I get them out?+
With a one-way exclusion on the right dates. A licensed pro finds every gap, installs one-way devices so the bats can leave but not return, confirms the roost is empty, and then seals the gaps and cleans up the droppings. It can't normally be done from April 1 through July 31, when young bats can't fly.
When can bats legally and safely be removed in Georgia?+
Outside the April 1–July 31 maternity season, when sealing the exits would trap flightless pups. That leaves early spring and August onward. Georgia DNR allows exclusion inside that window when a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator does it, and a pro can inspect at any time of year so you're ready to go when the window opens.
Are the bats dangerous — what about histoplasmosis or rabies?+
There are two real risks. Bat droppings can carry the fungus that causes histoplasmosis, a lung infection, so cleanup should be done by someone with the right protection. And any bat can carry rabies, so if one is found in your living space — especially where someone was asleep or near a child — don't touch it or let it go; call your local health department.
There are bats coming out of my chimney at dusk — what do I do?+
Don't put a cap on it yet. If there are young bats or the colony isn't fully out, a cap will trap them in the flue. Count how many come out and call a pro. They'll set up a one-way exclusion on the right dates and cap the chimney once it's empty.
Can't I just seal the gap where the bats get in?+
No. If you seal it before every bat is out — or during the maternity season — bats die inside your wall, and bats are protected. One-way devices come first so all of them leave, and the permanent seal goes on after.
How much does bat removal cost in Vinings?+
There's no flat rate. A few bats in one gable vent is a much smaller job than a large colony in the attic with droppings to clean up. Height and access matter a lot on a hillside home, along with the number of gaps to seal. Your local pro inspects first. Call to ask about pricing and availability.
